A broken stove can cause all sorts of headaches. All of that food you’ve bought is now rotting away in the fridge. Plus, you may be forced to buy takeaway that is bad for both your health and your wallet. Learning how to spot problems early and knowing who to call when problems arise can go a long way toward preventing any nightmare scenarios.
Here are three common problems people experience with their stoves:
1. The flame on the gas burners is orange
The gas flame of your burners should be blue with only slight orange tip. If you see too much orange, it could be that there are simple impurities in the area that will eventually go away. But if the orange flames don’t go away, it could be the result of clogging. Often, you can use a small metal pin or paper clip to clean them yourself.
If this doesn’t change the discolouration, you may need a technician to expertly clean your unit to avoid build-up of carbon monoxide. Read our earlier post on orange flames in gas stoves for more information.
2. The stove is making clicking noises
Clicking noises are common when igniting with gas cooktops, but sometimes the clicking persists. This can be caused by clogged electrodes, which can also be cleaned with a small metal pin or paper clip. Clicking can also be caused by excess moisture, in which case you’ll need to give it time to dry or otherwise use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
3. Your stove is not heating
A number of factors can cause a lack of heat. First, check to see if the stove is plugged in and that you haven’t blown a fuse. Other causes of heating problems include a burned out heating element, a broken thermostat or a damaged gasket. In these cases, it is best to call a technician who can accurately diagnose and fix the problem.
