Do Fridges Need Regular Maintenance?

The average refrigerator has a lifespan of around 14-18 years, and with regular maintenance, your fridge has a good chance of lasting even longer. To give your appliance a long lifespan, you can take half an hour out of your schedule a couple of times a year to make sure your appliance is in good working order.

Safety Precautions

Before attempting any maintenance work, unplug the power supply. If you plan to access the capacitor in any way, be aware that it contains electricity even when the power is off, so discharge it to avoid a shock. Consult a fridge repair or service expert if you are unsure.

Cleaning Your Fridge Condenser Coils

Fridge coils that work efficiently will reduce your energy bills and make your appliance last longer. They can get clogged with dust and grime over the course of years, which stops them from releasing heat efficiently. Use a vacuum cleaner and flexible cleaning brush to remove debris. The coils can usually be accessed either at the back of the fridge or underneath the grille at the bottom.

The Condenser Fan

Located near the compressor, the condenser fan cools the coils by circulating air across them. It may work less efficiently if clogged with dust and dirt. You can use a vacuum or a brush, but avoid using moisture to clean the fan.

Cleaning the Gasket

Use a warm, damp sponge to wipe any grime or stains off the gasket, the rubber door seal that keeps cool air in the fridge and freezer compartments where it belongs. If you notice any cracks or tears, the gasket can be replaced.

The Fridge and Freezer Interior

As well as wiping down shelves and removing spills and food remnants, you may need to defrost your freezer compartment if your appliance is not a frost-free model. If you notice a thick layer of frost on your freezer’s inside walls, turn the appliance off, remove all food items, and wait until the frost has melted before turning on the unit again.
