You depend on your range hood to keep the air in your home clean and safe to breathe. Unfortunately, many people are breathing air that is filled with impurities on a daily basis because their range hoods are no longer functioning properly. This is especially true in homes where ductless range hoods are installed.
Unlike a vented range hood, a ductless model does not release air to the outside. Instead, the air is passed through a filter, which removes impurities and fine particulates. Then, the filtered air is release back into the kitchen. The effectiveness of the range hood in a ductless model depends almost entirely on the filter.
Once a filter removes debris from the air, that grime and grease stays trapped inside of it. As the filter become dirtier and dirtier, it becomes less able to remove impurities. In most cases, a ductless range hood will continue to run even though it is no longer providing any real benefit, leaving unsuspecting homeowners breathing dirty air.
Fortunately, you can easily protect yourself and your family simply by checking the air filter on a monthly basis. Consult your owner’s manual for instructions on how to locate the filter, and be sure to inspect it every 3 to 6 months. If you have a newer model, an indicator light may illuminate when it’s time to change the filter, and it’s important not to ignore that signal.
