How to Clean Your Oven

Oven cleaning can seem like a laborious chore, especially if you’ve been putting it off for months letting the grease and food leftovers accumulate. Here are some handy tips and tricks to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Oven Types

Firstly, find out whether you have a regular or a self-cleaning oven. While regular ovens require cleaning by hand, self-cleaning and continuous cleaning ovens can turn leftover food and grease particles into ash, thus negating the need for a thorough manual clean.

Oven Cleaning Equipment

When opting for a heavy-duty oven-cleaning product, be sure to wear PVC gloves and ventilate your kitchen. You can place paper towels on the floor underneath the oven to avoid spills.

Use a micro-fibre cloth for general cleaning. When removing debris and stubborn stains, a scouring pad, dish brush, old toothbrush, or metal scraper will come in handy.

Natural Oven Cleaning Solutions

A combination of apple cider vinegar or white distilled vinegar, baking soda, and water can be an effective natural oven cleaner. The mixture should be thick enough to stick to oven walls without running down the sides immediately.

Cleaning Oven Racks and Trays

Remove the oven trays and racks and wash them in the sink. Tackle burnt food, carbon deposits, and stubborn grease stains with a scouring pad or scraper. Rinse all components with hot water and leave them out to dry while you clean the oven interior.

Cleaning the Oven Interior

Disconnect the oven from the electricity supply. Remove excess debris from the oven’s chamber and door first. Then, apply the oven-cleaning product generously to the door, window, and chambers. These can be scrubbed with an old dish brush.

If using a chemical oven-cleaning product, leave it to work for 15 minutes, or follow the instructions on the product. Natural, non-caustic products may require a longer period of time before removing.

Use scouring pads or scrapers to loosen grime then wipe away any excess with paper towels. Use a cloth to clean the insides one final time, making sure to eliminate all traces of the oven cleaner.

When finished, leave the oven door open to dry and ventilate.
