Is Dishwasher Rinse Aid Really Necessary?

You might have noticed a special container in your dishwasher for adding rinse aid. Is it really necessary to add a rinse agent to your dishwasher, and if so, how and why?

The purpose of rinse aid is to eliminate water spotting and streaking, and to improve your dishwasher’s drying performance. It alters the surface tension on your dishes, which lets water roll off without leaving a mark. Rinse aid controls the accumulation of hard water deposits and removes mineral residue from your dishes and glasses, which may be particularly high in areas where the water contains a large amount of mineral content.

Where Does Rinse Aid Go?

Add rinse aid into the dedicated rinse aid dispenser in your dishwasher before you begin a cycle. Different dishwasher models may have different rinse aid container or indicator types, such as a screw cap container with a dipstick indicator, a depressible glass model, or a screw cap with sight glass. When closing the dispenser, take care to adjust the knob into the lock position.

How Much Rinse Aid Should I Use?

Allow for 150-175ml of rinse aid with every application. Take note that once you add rinse aid and close the door, it may appear that the rinse aid level is low when you reopen the container door. This is not the case. Use the level indicator to determine whether there is enough rinse aid in your dishwasher.

How Often Should Rinse Aid Be Applied?

Rinse aid generally remains effective for a month or two, so there’s no need to add it with every new wash.  Bosch dishwashers, for example, will indicate when the rinse aid levels are low, as will many other models. You may also adjust the rinse aid release settings on your dishwasher, but take care not to damage your dishwasher, and consult a professional when in doubt to avoid the need for dishwasher repairs.

Rinse aid is also available in eco-friendly varieties, using non-toxic, plant-based ingredients. The usage of a dishwashing salt is also recommended, which softens water and works to protect your dishwasher from the damaging effects of limescale. With the right application of rinse aid, detergent, and dishwashing salts, you can maximise the quality of your dishwasher’s performance and lifespan.
