To “Dishwash or not”?

As experts in dishwasher repairs, we sometimes get calls from customers with simple questions about their appliances and our technicians often receive questions about general use when they’re on calls. Often, people are curious about what types of items shouldn’t be washed in the dishwasher, either because doing so could damage the items or the appliance.

While there are exceptions to every rule, there are some types of items that you should hand-wash only. You can use this handy reference list to help you make the “Dishwash or not?” decision.

Decorative glassware – Crystal and hand-blown glass is very sensitive to heat and can become permanently etched by the dishwasher.

Fine cutlery – Even though your knives can cut through meats and produce with ease, those sturdy blades are not meant for the dishwasher. Stick to hand-washing to keep your knives sharp and free of wear.

Cast iron and nonstick cookware – Any chef will tell you that proper seasoning is the key to making delicious dishes in cast iron skillets. Dishwashers will remove the seasoning, so you should only hand-wash these items unless they are brand new. Nonstick cookware should also be hand-washed to keep the Teflon coating intact.

Wooden spoons and tools – Unless treated to make them dishwasher-safe, wooden items will typically warp and swell if you load them into the dishwasher.

Disposable containers – While it’s thrifty to reuse disposable containers, you should wash these items by hand. Reusable foil trays are typically too light to stay in place during the dishwasher cycles and can cause damage to other items as they shift about. Disposable plastic containers may melt when exposed to the high heat of dishwashers. If you want to rinse aluminum cans prior to recycling, do these by hand as the adhesives that hold labels in place can cause clogs in the dishwasher.

Gold servingware – Gold silverware and china trimmed in gold should always be hand-washed, as the dishwasher can easily damage the plating used on these items.
